Queensland looks to chip away at smartcard driver licence

Smartcard technology in the new Queensland driver licences may be scaled back, a committee has been told. The former state government introduced new, more expensive licences and proof-of-age cards to replace the old laminated versions amid a push to improve security and tackle identity fraud. The cards are embedded with a mini computer chip that stores basic personal details and a five-year licence now costs motorists $143.75.
