Diebold Nixdorf Helps Retailers and Their Customers Reduce Printed Receipts

Diebold Nixdorf announced the launch of Vynamic Digital Receipt, a sustainable solution to reduce the amount of thermal paper receipts.

Consumers can receive digital receipts via QR code at the point of sale (POS) without the need to register or via their retailer's app, so they have it available whenever necessary.

Retailers can easily add accessible promotions and offers to strengthen customer loyalty, while significantly saving costs and reducing their environmental impact.

Every retail transaction requires a receipt: Retailers must issue them to be legally compliant, and customers must present them to return an item or make a warranty claim. Based on this traditional approach of using thermal paper, millions of printed receipts are produced, resulting in retailer's incurring unnecessary expenses as well as adversely impacting the retailer's sustainable footprint. Further, customers often struggle with storing them as thermal paper receipts gradually fade as they are susceptible to heat and UV light.

Diebold Nixdorf will showcase Vynamic Digital Receipt at this year's EuroCIS, taking place May 31 – June 2 in Düsseldorf. Please register here to schedule a demo at Diebold Nixdorf's booth #D25, located in hall 9.

SpotSee Rolls Out New TiltWatch RFID

SpotSee, a manufacturer of supply chain indicators that protect products against damage and ensure supply chain integrity, has expanded its TiltWatch product line to include an indicator that combines tilt-monitoring capabilities with passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology. The new TiltWatch RFID alerts users when a product has been tipped or mishandled.

TiltWatch RFID was designed to encompass all the benefits of a condition-monitoring program while also giving users an electronic record of information, captured in an enterprise resource planning (ERP) or warehouse management system. When goods pass through an RFID gate, the TiltWatch RFID tag quickly identifies if products might have been damaged due to being tipped.

Users then know if there is a need for further inspection of a package. Data provides transparency by identifying trouble spots in the supply chain and conveying the need for refined processes to reduce supply chain disruptions.

The indicator is triggered when the item it’s affixed to is mishandled and tilted beyond 80 degrees. TiltWatch RFID gives users an electronic record; communicating that damage may have occurred when scanned with any Gen 2 UHF reader. While it provides a visual sign of tilt by turning read, reading the indicator with RFID eliminates the need for visual inspection which speeds the receiving process. This cost-effective, single-use indicator is serialized, tamperproof and not affected by random vibration encountered in transportation.

New breathable gas sensors may improve monitoring of health, environment

Newly developed flexible, porous and highly sensitive nitrogen dioxide sensors that can be applied to skin and clothing have potential applications in health care, environmental health monitoring and military use, according to researchers.

Led by Huanyu "Larry" Cheng, assistant professor of engineering science and mechanics at Penn State, the researchers published their sensor designs, which build on previous models, and results in ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces.

The sensors monitor nitrogen dioxide, either from breath if attached under the nose, or from perspiration, if attached elsewhere on the body. Unlike taking blood samples, the direct skin attachment allows for continuous, long-term monitoring of the gas.

The researchers created the new sensors using a fabrication method known as laser direct writing.

Laser direct writing is similar to additive manufacturing in that it is easy to set up and low cost, and the laser is widely available. The process is relatively robust, rapid and could be scaled up to large-scale manufacturing production.

Commission sends Statement of Objections to Apple over practices regarding Apple Pay

The European Commission has informed Apple of its preliminary view that it abused its dominant position in markets for mobile wallets on iOS devices.

By limiting access to a standard technology used for contactless payments with mobile devices in stores (‘Near-Field Communication (NFC)' or ‘tap and go'), Apple restricts competition in the mobile wallets market on iOS.

The Commission takes issue with the decision by Apple to prevent mobile wallets app developers, from accessing the necessary hardware and software (‘NFC input') on its devices, to the benefit of its own solution, Apple Pay.

The Commission preliminarily considers that Apple enjoys significant market power in the market for smart mobile devices and a dominant position on mobile wallet markets.

In particular, Apple Pay is the only mobile wallet solution that may access the necessary NFC input on iOS. Apple does not make it available to third-party app developers of mobile wallets. The NFC ‘tap and go' technology is embedded on Apple mobile devices for payments in stores. This technology enables communication between a mobile phone and payments terminals in stores. NFC is standardised, available in almost all payment terminals in stores and allows for the safest and most seamless mobile payments. Compared to other solutions, NFC offers a more seamless and more secure payment experience and enjoys wider acceptance in Europe.

Smart security label offers dual layer of protection

Covectra announced the issuance of US Patent Number 11,295,126 by the United State patent Office (USPTO) for its StellaGuard security labeling device.  StellaGuard is a smart security label that offers a dual layer of protection - both overt and covert technology  - in a single label.

StellaGuard is the only security device in the market that enables the consumer direct access to confirm authenticity of a product either at the point of purchase or prior to purchase.

Unlike current technologies, StellaGuard is singular in nature - each security labeling device is uniquely protected.  Counterfeiters count on static images that continuously repeat, which are easy to reproduce.

Each StellaGuard label has a non-reproducible film that combines both a covert feature of holographic 'stars' that create a random, non-repeatable, three-dimensional pattern as well as an overt feature of a randomly serialized QR code.  A simple scanning of the QR code by the consumer using the StellaGuard mobile app can immediately authenticate the product.

Charanga Deploys RFID Technology to Lay Groundwork for Omnichannel Services

Spanish children’s clothing retailer Charanga will deploy the Nedap iD Cloud platform at all owned stores, franchised stores and displays inside El Corte Inglés locations in Spain, Portugal and Italy.

The retailer is aiming to achieve full stock visibility in its supply chain.

A total of 150 stores will be covered by the Nedap platform, according to Retail Touchpoints.

Charanga will use RFID technology to enable a real-time view of stock in order to optimize product availability across all channels and provide the foundation for omnichannel services including buy online, pick up in-store (BOPIS) and ship-to-store. The technology also is expected to help reduce waste and lead to fewer markdowns.

Dorset Council steps up use of 5G in-home sensors

Dorset Council has recently announced that it will increase its use of IoT sensors in the homes of vulnerable people to help identify those that may be in danger.

They are supplied by Internet of Things Solutions Group (IoTSG), connected via the Vodafone network, and placed on an individual’s kitchen shelf to monitor daily activity and send alerts of any changes in daily patterns, potentially indicating a fall or illness.

They can monitor ambient and environmental factors, and record behaviour patterns based on activities such as the use of a kettle, cooking and washing up.

The council said this approach provides reassurance for friends and family and enables a more targeted response by carers and emergency services, potentially saving money and time for the health and social care system.

Adhesive Films Market to grow at a CAGR of 4.6% during 2022-2030

The global Adhesive Films Market is expected to experience strong growth in the coming years. It is projected to reach US$ 96.6 billion by the year 2030, growing at a CAGR of 4.6%. Adhesive films are versatile and highly effective products that are used in a wide range of applications across a variety of industries. They play an important role in holding different materials together while also providing cushioning, protection, and other desirable properties.

These films are used in radio frequency identification (RFID), LED lighting, aerospace electronics, construction, handheld computing, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics.

These are made up of materials such as polyethene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polyvinyl acetate, and polyvinyl butyral. Adhesive films are employed in the electronics industry to hold information labels and warning labels. These adhesives are also used as protective insulation wrap. Similarly, packaging industries use these adhesives to increase the safety of packaging material.

Adhesive films form a permanent structural bond with the attaching surface after undergoing the curative process and offer strong resistance under harsh environments such as high temperatures.

Factors such as stringent government norms to lower carbon emissions by reducing vehicle weight and demand for fuel-effective automobiles drive the growth of the adhesive film market. Furthermore, developments in electrical & electronics, automotive & transportation, packaging, and medical industries also boost the adhesive film market growth.

Moreover, extensive use of adhesive films in the automotive industry for reinforcement plates, door hinge washers, and bracket attachments is another factor that fuels the market growth.

Global Market for Seaport IoT Technologies Will Grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 25%

Seaports across the globe have begun to implement a range of smart technologies to meet increasing demands on the shipping industry, improve productivity, and reduce the environmental impacts of shipping.

The global market for seaport IoT technologies, which includes expected spending on sensors and automation technologies for small and large global ports, is estimated at $2.67 billion in 2021. According to a new report from Guidehouse Insights, this market is expected to grow to $25.29 billion in 2031, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.2%.

Livestock Monitoring Market to Reach USD 1006.7 Million by 2028

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global Livestock Monitoring market size is estimated to be worth USD 562.1 Million in 2022 and is forecast to be a readjusted size of USD 1006.7 Million by 2028 with a CAGR of 10.2% during the review period.

Some of the major factors driving the Livestock Monitoring market growth include a growing focus on real-time monitoring and early disease detection, growing adoption of IoT and AI for livestock monitoring, the covid-19 outbreak, rising demand for meat globally, and cost savings achieved through the adoption of livestock monitoring solutions.

Due to the rapid rise in the global population, the number of dairies, poultry, and swine farms has increased significantly in recent years to meet the growing demand for meat and dairy products.

The ever-increasing number of dairy cattle to meet the global demand for dairy products such as butter, cheese, curd, and yogurt is largely to blame for the rising demand for livestock monitoring solutions. Similarly, increased meat consumption has resulted to the growth. As the size of a dairy farm's herd grows, manually identifying and monitoring the herd becomes more difficult. As a result, the growing size of livestock farms provides opportunities for the livestock monitoring market to expand.

Digital Wallets Transaction Value to Grow by 60% by 2026 Globally

A new study from Juniper Research has found the value of digital wallets transactions will exceed $12 trillion in 2026, from $7.5 trillion in 2022. To capitalise on this substantial growth, the research predicts leading digital payment vendors will diversify their payment products to include new solutions, such as buy-now-pay-later and cryptocurrencies.

Digital wallets are software-based systems that securely store users’ payment information for many payment methods in one location.

The new research, Digital Wallets: Key Opportunities, Vendor Analysis and Market Forecasts 2022-2026, found increasing merchant acceptance of digital wallets methods at eCommerce checkouts has been a driving force behind enabling further digital wallets use. It predicts APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that connect financial institutions to local retailers will be key to the international growth of digital wallets usage for large, cross-border eCommerce merchants.

The research also recommends that digital wallets vendors look to offer value-added services, such as loyalty rewards and credit, to diversify their revenue streams; capitalising on a highly active user base.
