Eight in ten payment terminals across the world now accept contactless payments

More than eight in ten payment terminals worldwide now accept contactless payments (82%) as the number of outlets accepting card payments globally grew by 2% in 2021 to reach 88m and the number of eftpos terminals increased by 5% to reach 134, research by RBR shows.

The firm’s ‘Global Payment Cards Data and Forecasts to 2027’ report identifies the Covid-19 pandemic together with government mandates and incentives such as tax breaks as key drivers for this growth, and predicts that the number of eftpos terminals will continue to rise, reaching a global total of 165m across 109m outlets by 2027.

In some countries, card acceptance is expanding rapidly but this is not translating into surges in card expenditure due to competition from alternative cashless payment methods.

OffGrid Launches Innovative Faraday Wallet

The OffGrid Switch Faraday Wallet transforms an everyday wallet into a high-security mobile phone case as soon as you insert your device. The wallet's hidden pocket cuts the phone off from all cell, Bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-Fi signals and places it in an electronic stealth mode. It will now be impossible to hack the device, track its location, or identify its owner.

A Faraday wallet is a type of Faraday cage. When you insert the device, it'll be surrounded by a mesh of conducting materials. If an incoming electronic field touches the cage, it will interact with this material, scrambling the field to disrupt its intent.

All panels are metal lined providing RFID protection commonly found in most wallets, but simply flip the wallet open and slide a phone in for full shielding.

This wallet is also made from premium, rugged, weather-resistant polyester and has an attractive design. It features an additional quick-access card holder for your most frequently accessed ID, debit, or credit card.

The OffGrid Switch Faraday Wallet is now available for a limited time.

Pi Pico QR Display Hands Out WiFi Info

Nowadays you can store your wireless network’s credentials in a QR code, so that anyone who wants to connect with their smartphone need only scan the 2D barcode. Whether you print it out on paper, extrude it out of plastic, or paint the thing on the wall, it still works the same.

But what if you want to change up the encryption key every so often? Sure would be a hassle to have to repaint the wall. Enter this interesting project from Predrag Mijatovic, which uses a few scripts to automatically set up a new encrypted guest WiFi network and present the appropriate QR code on an OLED display attached to a Raspberry Pi Pico.

Smart Waste Management Systems Global Market to Reach $675.3 Billion by 2027

The continuing expansion of the global population has increased waste production, challenging cities, countries and municipalities to meet the demand for its effective disposal. A proper waste management system helps avoid spreading deadly diseases and safeguard the health of everyone. To achieve the goal of improved waste disposal, IoT-based waste management systems have been introduced in smart cities across the globe.

In a planned system, multiple waste bins are deployed across cities and linked with an embedded structure to help with tracking waste levels in different waste bins, according to their placed unique IDs. This also assists with tracking efforts that result in timely waste collection efforts. Smart waste management is characterized by the use of technology to facilitate waste management efficiency. Thus, waste collection is conducted in a more timely manner, thus avoiding delays and waste build-up that could lead to unsanitary risks.

Smart waste management helps to denote the place of waste generation from public places, residential buildings, hospitals and other institutions. Different technologies, such as vacuum containers, radio frequency identification (RFID) disposal tags and sensor containers, are used for providing real-time fill positions and overall assessments of different types of waste. Efficient and proper management of different types of waste through the overall integrated system can help minimize many issues related to climatic changes, environmental pollution and public health. Recent endemic diseases such as the coronavirus have positively impacted the waste management market by raising awareness about the disposal of products deemed hazardous to human health as well as nonhazardous.

The growing volume of e-waste is a major concern at the global level. Planned and efficient waste management technologies such as cloud management structure, RFID and gasification of hazardous substances with proper care are the driving factors for Indian Waste Management Systems market across developed economies. However, due to the huge cost of implementation during setup, service and maintenance across developing nations such as China and India will challenge market growth during the forecast period.

DENSO Receives IEEE Corporate Innovation Award for Developing and Spreading Use of QR Code

DENSO Corporation announced it has received the IEEE Corporate Innovation Award from IEEE, the largest international association for electrical and electronic engineering in the world, for developing the QR Code and spreading its use globally.

The IEEE Corporate Innovation Award is presented to organizations that have made a significant global impact with innovative technologies and products and contributed to the development of electrical and electronic engineering.

The QR Code was developed in 1994 by DENSO's applied equipment engineering section (currently DENSO WAVE) as an easy-to-read code that can store a large amount of information. The innovative two-dimensional code can store about 200 times more information than barcodes and can be read at high speed. DENSO started to use the code mainly for inventory management at its manufacturing plants, and later made the patent available free of charge, enabling it to spread globally. In the early 2000s, the QR Code became familiar to the general public in line with the growing use of mobile phones equipped with cameras. Today, it is widely used in many daily life applications, including electronic tickets and cashless payments. In 2020, the QR Code was recognized as an IEEE Milestone*3 for its outstanding contribution.

Even 28 years after it was invented, the QR Code continues to evolve with the addition of new functions. DENSO WAVE developed SQRC,*4 which can carry two types of data (public and private) in a single code, Face Authentication SQRC, which can turn facial feature points into a QR Code, and Frame QR,*5 which offers design flexibility. The QR Code is contributing to personal identification, prevention of counterfeiting and information falsification, and generation of electronic tickets.

SimplyRFiD Adds Support for 128-Bit RAIN RFID Tags

SimplyRFiD's Wave version 3.3.6 now recognizes 128-Bit RFID tags as a reliable, interchangeable data format.

More than 28 billion RAIN RFID chips were deployed in 2021 and it's expected the RAIN RFID tag market will reach 35 billion in 2022.

The majority of these chips are low-cost 3 cent 96-bit RFID "product ID tags" used in supply chain logistics for retailers. The RFID product tags perform a similar function as the barcode from the 1970's, but they can be read through through a cardboard box and at a speed of 1,000 items (tags) per second.

Last month SimplyRFiD launched an update to its popular Wave App. Wave is an iOS app that uses an RFID Handheld to count your inventory.
