McDonald’s France Will Use RFID Technology for Reusable Containers

Starting from January 1st of this year, restaurants in France are prohibited from serving food in single-use packaging. According to France24, there are 30,000 fast-food outlets in the country that serve six billion meals each year.

McDonald’s France has commissioned Checkpoint Systems to install RFID hardware and software in numerous restaurants across the nation. The project promises to decrease waste by offering real-time visibility of McDonald’s reusable tableware stock, enabling swift and efficient inventory management, optimizing restocking and safeguarding the restaurant’s inventory for future security and usability.

Cosmetics brand to launch face stickers with NFC

L’Oréal cosmetics brand Shu Uemura has launched limited edition stickers that contain an NFC chip. Users can place the stickers on their face and scan them with their NFC-enabled smartphone to create digital content.

The stickers allow users to access and apply three interactive augmented reality (AR) filters to enhance images of themselves on multimedia messaging platform Snapchat and add digital makeup to avatars in the metaverse.

Shu Uemura is also collaborating with digital fashion brand Rtfkt to develop AR filters and digital makeup that can be worn by avatars in Rtkft’s Clone X avatar ecosystem.

Impinj awarded $18.5M in damages in patent lawsuit against NXP

A federal jury in California has found that Dutch semiconductor giant NXP infringed two of Impinj's patents related to radio frequency identification (RFID) chips. The jury awarded Impinj approximately $18.5 million in damages and lost profits.

The technology at issue is used to connect billions of items to the internet and help companies track their products. Impinj is a Seattle-based company that is a leading provider of RFID technology.

This is the second decision this summer that has come down in Impinj's favor. In June, a federal jury in Washington concluded that Impinj was innocent of infringing on NXP's patent.

Checkpoint Systems RFID to overhaul fast-food dining operations in France with roll-out of reusable tableware RFID Technology

Checkpoint Systems has announced it is working with McDonald's France to incorporate RFID technology into the global fast-food giant's new reusable containers.

The move comes following McDonald's commitment to eliminating unnecessary packaging and contributing to the improvement of recycling systems. It also coincides with the introduction of new French legislation – that came into effect in January 2023 – and aims to fight waste to preserve biodiversity and natural resources.

Following an extensive two-year consultation process, Checkpoint was appointed to work with McDonald's France in 2021 to deliver the project which involved the installation of RFID hardware and software in restaurants across the country. The project will help McDonald's reduce waste by providing unrivalled real-time visibility of its reusable tableware stock, delivering fast and efficient inventory management, optimising replenishment and ensuring the restaurant's stock lines are protected for long-term security and usability.

Through laboratory test sessions and product consultations, Checkpoint Systems developed one of the first ever food-safe, heat-and water-resistant, RFID solution. The pioneering design has been applied from cups and bottles to fries' containers, enabling them to be monitored and potentially tracked through an automated database.

In addition, the database will provide McDonald's France with real-time data on stock inventory – including the container type and quantities – and replenishment requirements, delivering up to 99% accuracy. Through its automated track and trace function, restaurants can also pinpoint the location of nearby containers (in case a container is accidentally discarded into a rubbish bin) to minimise the risk of shrink. To date, Checkpoint has supplied RFID solutions to more than 1,200 McDonald's France restaurants.

Dior unveils sneakers with NFC

Dior has recently introduced a product that uses NFC to link a customer’s physical fashion item to a digital twin.

The new B33 sneakers will be released in an initial numbered and limited edition version of 470 pairs. Seven additional versions of the sneaker will follow “soon after” each featuring their own unique colorway.

Each pair includes an encrypted key that leads to a personal, secure platform offering dedicated services. Within this space, everyone can access the shoes’ certificate of authenticity, additional information on the different stages of the manufacturing process, and even announcements for future sneaker launches.

Other luxury fashion brands have also been using NFC technology to enhance their products. Last month Fila announced it was partnering with Ninjas in Pyjamas (NIP) to launch an NFC-equipped jersey for esports fans and Adidas linked NFTs to physical sneakers with NFC hang tags. In April, Hugo Boss revealed it was adding NFC tags to baseball caps that enabled purchasers to create NFT digital twins.

Vishay introduced IR Sensor Modules for outdoor sensor applications

Vishay Intertechnology has introduced two new fixed-gain infrared (IR) sensor modules designed to lower costs and increase stability for outdoor sensor applications.

The devices are ideal for sensing the distance to objects for toys, drones, robots, and vicinity switches presence detection for traffic control lights and parking lot, gateway access, and water level sensors and light barriers for sports racing and lawnmower robots.

Offering typical irradiance of 1.3 mW/m² in compact Minimold packages, the surface-mount TSSP93038DF1PZA and leaded TSSP93038SS1ZA provide robust operation in direct sunlight while still providing enough sensitivity for light barrier applications.

Unlike high sensitivity fixed-gain IR sensor modules that require attenuators like dark panels, apertures, and sunshades to protect them against sunlight — adding to overall solutions costs — the controlled sensitivity of the Vishay Semiconductors devices released today allows them to operate in full sunlight without unwanted pulses. In addition, for short range presence and proximity applications, the sensors’ reduced sensitivity eliminates the need for extremely low emitter forward currents, which can lead to unstable intensity outputs.

The TSSP93038DF1PZA and TSSP93038SS1ZA operate over a supply voltage range from 2.0 V to 3.6 V, feature a low supply current of 0.35 mA, and are sensitive to a carrier frequency of 38 kHz. Designed to receive IR pulses from an emitter with a peak wavelength of 940 nm, the devices are insensitive to ripple noise on the supply voltage and provide shielding against EMI, while an IR filter suppresses visible light. The modules are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green.
