Wiliot Named to Fast Company's Third Annual List of the Next Big Things in Tech

Wiliot, the Internet of Things pioneer whose IoT platform is enabling trillions of "things" to gain intelligence, announced that its ambient IoT Pixels and Visibility Platform has been named to Fast Company's third annual Next Big Things in Tech list.  The esteemed award program honors the technology breakthroughs that promise to shape the future of industries—from healthcare and security to artificial intelligence and data.

The Wiliot ambient IoT Visibility Platform, which is currently found inside the supply chains of many of the world's largest companies, was recognized for its ability to connect the digital and physical worlds using its IoT Pixels – stamp-sized, self-powered compute devices that cost pennies.

These IoT Pixels can attach to any "thing" to connect it to the internet; not just expensive things like cars, appliances, shipping containers, and crates, but the things inside them: fruits, veggies, vaccine vials, clothes, airplane parts, and just about everything else.

Once connected, products transmit real-time, case and item-level information about their location, temperature, humidity, and carbon footprint – equipping some of the world's largest companies with the data they need to make more profitable, sustainably-minded decisions that increase revenue, improve safety, and create a more livable planet.

The ambient IoT will also act as the extended nervous system for artificial intelligence, enabling businesses to communicate with trillions of Wiliot-connected products through generative AI platforms from OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and others to come.

Integrating ambient IoT and generative AI goes beyond just passive supply chain visibility, enabling business leaders to take action to address supply chain issues, such as fixing bottlenecks; taking action when vegetable containers are above their temperature thresholds; and reducing the carbon footprint of a specific product line in real time.

UK rail operators call for national pay-as-you-go contactless ticketing

The UK Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents the country’s train operating companies, has issued a periodic indicative notice (PIN) to procure a ‘tap converter service’ (TCS) that would enable rail operators to offer pay-as-you-go digital ticketing options and ensure that passengers pay the best possible fare for their journeys1.

The TCS will allow operators to submit taps from multiple token types, from which it will construct journeys and determine the best available fare based on the latest rail data, such as timetable, disruption, fare data, and more. It will then provide the calculated fare information to the operator so it can charge the customer and submit settlement records to the rail industry settlement engine1.

The RDG aims to deliver a ‘best of class’ service that aligns with the strategic vision for future digital ticketing for GB Rail going forward1.

Collaborations between satellite operators and mobile operators that explore new hybrid satellite-terrestrial connectivity opportunities will become common in the next years and recent examples include Telefonica & Sateliot, Deutsche Telekom & Intelsat/Skylo and Soracom & Astrocast.

Vital signs monitoring capabilities get a boost thanks to ams OSRAM’s ultra-low noise AFE sensor technology

ams OSRAM launches the AS7058, an analog front end (AFE) which enables manufacturers of smart watches, smart rings and other wearable devices to improve the accuracy and reliability of vital signs measurements derived from photoplethysmographic (PPG) or electrical signals while extending battery run-time.

The new AS7058 also provides a new means for differentiating wearable products, introducing the capability to perform body impedance measurement, for analysis of body composition.

The AS7058’s ultra-low noise characteristics produce a very high optical signal-to-noise ratio of 120dB. This enables substantial improvements, compared to competing products, in PPG measurement performance in the parameters of heart rate, respiration rate, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and blood pressure. The outstanding optical noise performance of the AS7058 is the result of developments including the integration of two low-noise, 20-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), the provision of integrated low-noise LED drivers, and the introduction of new automatic ambient light offset correction technology.

The signal-to-noise ratio of the AS7058 also enables wearable device manufacturers to reduce power consumption by driving the device’s LEDs at lower current while maintaining high signal integrity.

Singer/Songwriter Gives Museumgoers a Soundtrack for Manet

An unauthorized audio guide is shaking things up for art goers at Metropolitan Museum in New York City, centered around an exhibit that features an artist who was no stranger to scandal himself.

Kristen Lee Sergeant, an NYC based singer/songwriter, had been writing songs inspired by Manet's artwork since seeing an exhibit at the Getty years ago. When the Met announced the arrival of the "Manet/Degas" exhibit this fall, she recorded demos of the songs that corresponded to the paintings shown in the exhibit. She swiftly launched a website that pairs her songs and the art, inviting museumgoers to a very unique and personal audio guide experience.

She has been distributing cards on the steps of the Met with a QR code linking to the site and one of Manet's maxims, in French, that translates to "Make the truth and let them talk."

Sergeant's project, "Manet and the Women," brings to life the portrait subjects in a way that is entirely new. She explains: "Manet's women have a self-possession and mystery about them. Song is uniquely able to find its way into these mysteries and bring a new intimacy with the art for the listener."

Singapore pilots next generation QR mobile payments service

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is testing an upgraded version of its SGQR unified QR payment code. This new version will allow merchants to accept QR code payments made using a wider range of local and cross-border payment schemes through a single financial institution, instead of having to maintain commercial relationships with individual payment scheme providers.

The new version, called SGQR+, will also give consumers, including tourists and other foreign visitors, more payment options. They will be able to use both domestic and foreign payment applications to make QR code payments at merchants participating in the proof of concept trial.

According to MAS, SGQR has become widely adopted by merchants as a simple and trusted solution to accept payments digitally. However, merchants that wish to accept a range of payment schemes (local or foreign) need to maintain commercial relationships with different financial institutions. Consumers and tourists can only use their preferred payment applications if the merchant maintains a specific commercial relationship with the financial institution that corresponds with those payment schemes.

Tiny radar biometric sensor could identify people by their heartbeat

Researchers at the University of California, Davis have developed a millimeter-wave radar sensor that is capable of detecting biometrics including heartbeats.

The sensor is battery-powered and is described as being the size of a sesame seed. It can detect vibrations that are a hundred times as small as a human hair, and it is so sensitive that it can hear a small leaf thinning as it runs out of water.

The team used software on the sensor itself to cancel noise instead of working on a hardware answer to the noise problem, which would have increased the need for power. The millimeter-wave sensor is inexpensive to manufacture at scale, and it is considered a short-range sensor, but it is unclear just how short the range is 12.

Similar technology has been reported by Biometric Update since 2020, but it involved infrared lasers connected to biometric sensors that could identify people by the way their clothes vibrate over their heart. Development began in 2010 by Ideal Innovations and Washington University
