Major Backdoor in Millions of RFID Cards Allows Instant Cloning

French security services firm Quarkslab has uncovered a significant backdoor in millions of contactless cards produced by Shanghai Fudan Microelectronics Group, a prominent Chinese chip manufacturer.

This backdoor, detailed in a research paper by Quarkslab researcher Philippe Teuwen, enables the instantaneous cloning of RFID smart cards used globally to access office buildings and hotel rooms.

The backdoor requires only a few minutes of physical proximity to an affected card to execute an attack. However, an attacker capable of performing a supply chain attack could carry out these attacks instantaneously on a large scale, as explained by Teuwen in his paper.

Originally launched in 1994 by Philips (now NXP Semiconductors), the MIFARE Classic card family has been subjected to numerous attacks over the years. Security vulnerabilities that allow “card-only” attacks—attacks requiring access to a card but not the corresponding card reader—are particularly concerning, as they enable attackers to clone cards or read and write their content with just a few minutes of physical proximity. Over the years, new versions of the MIFARE Classic family have addressed various documented attacks.

3.2 billion smart payment cards and modules shipped in 2023 by SPA

Smart Payment Association (SPA), the trade body of the cards and mobile payments industry,  released findings from its annual review of the smart payment cards market.

Led and organized by the SPA, utilizing data collected from its own members and participants of the SPA Market Monitoring Advisory Council, this annual analysis of worldwide smart payment card and module shipments reveals a total shipment volume of 3.2 billion units were delivered in 2023 – up from 2.6 billion units shipped in 2022.

The rise in shipments can be attributed to several factors. In addition to welcoming new members into the SPA, 2023 saw a few existing members extend their market perimeters. This expansion of SPA coverage resulted in the capture of incremental shipment figures for the 2023 review.

In parallel with these changes, disruptions, caused by the global silicon chip shortage, reduced throughout the year. As a result, SPA members were able to meet the increased demand caused by the need to replenish inventory levels, as well as the demand from 2022 that was postponed to 2023.

Reflecting growing consumer demand for eco-friendly payment cards alongside new corporate ESG mandates from governments, 2023 saw issuing banks in regions around the word accelerate their rollout of sustainable card issuance strategies designed to reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions.

Last year global eco-friendly card shipments represented 21% of worldwide total SPA card shipments. This strong share increase (+7 percentage points compared to 14% in 2022 figures), highlights the pace and scale at which banks are transitioning away from first-use PVC as a payment card material.

50% of these eco-friendly card shipments were for the European market, demonstrating the leadership of this region in the transition, while 40% were delivered to the Americas.

Paris Corp., a paper converter, has developed a comprehensive RFID program to meet Walmart’s RFID tagging mandates. This program includes custom-designed inlay encoding, label printing and application equipment, and custom encoding software.

RFID technology is particularly useful for inventory management in retail environments. For Walmart, it helps track products within stores, reducing stockouts and improving efficiency.

Walmart’s history with RFID mandates dates back to 2003, when it became the first retailer to require its suppliers to apply RFID tags to cases and pallets of incoming products, or to individual high-value items. By 2006, its top 500 suppliers were expected to have implemented the technology.

At that time, RFID was highly anticipated in industry circles. However, by 2007, almost every supplier had missed the deadline, and the program fizzled out due to early-stage technology challenges and high implementation costs.

Developers can soon offer in‑app NFC transactions using the Secure Element

Starting with iOS 18.1, developers will be able to offer NFC contactless transactions using the Secure Element from within their own apps on iPhone, separate from Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. Using the new NFC and SE (Secure Element) APIs, developers will be able to offer in-app contactless transactions for in-store payments, car keys, closed-loop transit, corporate badges, student IDs, home keys, hotel keys, merchant loyalty and rewards cards, and event tickets, with government IDs to be supported in the future.

As users’ security and privacy is of the utmost importance to Apple, this new solution was designed to provide developers with a secure way to offer NFC contactless transactions from within their iOS apps. The NFC and SE APIs leverage the Secure Element — an industry-standard, certified chip designed to store sensitive information securely on device. Apple has dedicated significant resources to design a solution that protects users’ security and privacy, leveraging a number of Apple’s proprietary hardware and software technologies when making a contactless transaction, including the Secure Enclave, biometric authentication, and Apple servers. To make a contactless transaction within an app that utilizes these APIs, users can either open the app directly, or set the app as their default contactless app in iOS Settings, and double-click the side button on iPhone to initiate a transaction.

To incorporate this new solution in their iPhone apps, developers will need to enter into a commercial agreement with Apple, request the NFC and SE entitlement, and pay the associated fees. This ensures that only authorized developers who meet certain industry and regulatory requirements, and commit to Apple’s ongoing security and privacy standards, can access the relevant APIs. The NFC and SE APIs will be available to developers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S. in an upcoming developer seed for iOS 18.1, with additional locations to follow. Developers and users will continue to have access to the easy, secure, and private experience of Apple Pay and Wallet.

Aqara releases new FP1E Presence Sensor with Matter and HomeKit support

Aqara is releasing its new FP1E presence sensor. The Aqara FP1E supports the Zigbee protocol and Matter over an Aqara Matter bridge. The FP1E offers seamless integration with popular Matter platforms, including Amazon Alexa, HomeKit, Google Home, Home Assistant, Homey, and Samsung SmartThings.

The Aqara FP1E uses advanced millimeter wave (mmWave) technology to pick up even the smallest human movements. This means it can reliably detect presence up to 6 meters (about 20 feet) away and monitor areas as large as 50 square meters (about 538 square feet) when mounted on the ceiling. Unlike traditional PIR motion sensors, the FP1E can sense when someone is sitting or lying still, making it perfect for keeping track of occupancy. These barcodes will not only help in ensuring that trafficked plants get accurately recognized but also help detect substitutions in the market, preserving the integrity of the species and supporting conservation efforts.

Blackbird Launches New Restaurant Payments and Rewards Platform

Blackbird Labs, the hospitality-tech company founded by Resy and Eater co-founder Ben Leventhal, announced the launch of Blackbird Pay, an all new payments product designed to improve economics for restaurants, while providing guests with a transformative dining experience.

Powered by Blackbird's new blockchain, the Blackbird Flynet, Blackbird Pay gives restaurants a fresh way to address the ever growing problem of shrinking margins and eroding cash reserves by providing them with their very own end-to-end payments and check settlement network for the first time. Restaurants on the Blackbird Pay network pay on average 2% per transaction, a huge cost savings as compared to the fees typical in legacy processing fee structures. When a diner checks-in at a Blackbird (member) restaurant, they simply tap on a proprietary Blackbird puck, with an NFC chip at the host stand, or register when they arrive and a check opens within the Blackbird app. Diners can then indicate if they want to split the bill with their tablemates, pay for their meal with their accumulated Blackbird $FLY points, use their credit or debit card within the app to pay, or choose to use a combination of $FLY and a card. They can also tip with it, too. If a diner doesn't have enough $FLY points to cover their meal, they are able to purchase points in-app using traditional payment methods or USDC.

3.2 billion smart payment cards and modules shipped in 2023 by SPA

Smart Payment Association (SPA), the trade body of the cards and mobile payments industry, released findings from its annual review of the smart payment cards market.

Led and organized by the SPA, utilizing data collected from its own members and participants of the SPA Market Monitoring Advisory Council, this annual analysis of worldwide smart payment card and module shipments reveals a total shipment volume of 3.2 billion units were delivered in 2023 – up from 2.6 billion units shipped in 2022.

The rise in shipments can be attributed to several factors. In addition to welcoming new members into the SPA, 2023 saw a few existing members extend their market perimeters. This expansion of SPA coverage resulted in the capture of incremental shipment figures for the 2023 review.

In parallel with these changes, disruptions, caused by the global silicon chip shortage, reduced throughout the year. As a result, SPA members were able to meet the increased demand caused by the need to replenish inventory levels, as well as the demand from 2022 that was postponed to 2023.

Reflecting growing consumer demand for eco-friendly payment cards alongside new corporate ESG mandates from governments, 2023 saw issuing banks in regions around the word accelerate their rollout of sustainable card issuance strategies designed to reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions.

Last year global eco-friendly card shipments represented 21% of worldwide total SPA card shipments. This strong share increase (+7 percentage points compared to 14% in 2022 figures), highlights the pace and scale at which banks are transitioning away from first-use PVC as a payment card material.

50% of these eco-friendly card shipments were for the European market, demonstrating the leadership of this region in the transition, while 40% were delivered to the Americas.

Close collaboration across the payment card industry is helping to fuel these transformative efforts. In addition to eco-card innovations, SPA members are pioneering end-to-end approaches that encompass a breadth of 'cradle to grave' processes – everything from rethinking materials such as inks, envelopes and packaging through to end-of-life recycling.

A growing consumer preference for contactless payments helped propel a significant uptick in contactless card shipments in markets around the world.

Accounting for 88% of total global shipments recorded for 2023 (up 4 percentage points on 2022 figures), SPA members reported an impressive 27% increase in overall contactless shipment volumes. With every country in the world now issuing dual interface cards that support contactless payments, the lowest regional share of contactless shipments hit 78%, with the highest achieving 99%.
