Indonesia adds support for NFC payments to QR mobile payment system

Indonesia’s central bank has introduced NFC payment support to the country’s QRIS national QR mobile payments platform, following a similar move by Brazil’s central bank last month with its Pix system.

Bank Indonesia describes the new feature, QRIS Tap, as a “fast, convenient, affordable, secure, and reliable” payment method designed to enhance digital retail transactions and public services.

QRIS Tap will be rolled out gradually, with plans for widespread adoption across various transportation channels, public services, and merchants. Initially, it will be available at select transportation hubs, parking lots, hospitals, retail locations, and small businesses. Specific locations include Bundaran HI and Lebak Bulus MRT stations, Transjakarta (limited to Royaltrans), DAMRI (limited to JR Connexion Jabodetabek), and hospitals such as RSUD Tarakan, RSCM Kencana, and RSPAD Gatot Subroto Paviliun Kartika.

In the next phase, QRIS Tap will expand to all MRT stations, Transjakarta routes, Jakarta and Jabodebek LRT routes, DAMRI ticketing, KRL (Jabodetabek and Jogja-Solo routes), Teman Bus, and additional merchants.

FCC Considers Reorganizing UHF RAIN RFID Band

A recent survey and comments from the FCC chairman suggest potential changes to the bandwidth currently designated for UHF RAIN RFID users and other Part 15 devices.

In April 2024, NextNav filed a rulemaking petition with the FCC to realign the 902-928 MHz band, which is used by RAIN RFID, LoRa transmissions, and Z-Wave. The proposed rule would allow 5G transmissions within this spectrum, potentially affecting existing UHF RAIN RFID and other Part 15 device operations. The FCC accepted public comments on the proposal last summer.

If approved, the changes could lead to increased congestion in the 902-928 MHz band, according to a joint statement from RFID industry groups RAIN Alliance and AIM Global.

Earlier this month, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced a broad deregulatory initiative to review all agency regulations, including broadcast ownership caps. On March 27, the FCC will explore alternatives to GPS in a Notice of Inquiry. While the notice mentions NextNav, it extends beyond the company and its petition.

Google Wallet is now live in Pakistan, launching with support from seven card issuers, with four additional issuers set to join soon.

The initial seven issuers enabling Google Wallet include Bank AlFalah, Bank of Punjab, Faysal Bank Noor, HBL, JazzCash, Meezan Bank, and UBL.

62% of Businesses Expect QR-Driven Revenue Growth, Uniqode Report Finds

Uniqode, the highest-ranked QR code platform on G2, released its inaugural State of QR Codes Report, featuring insights from over 600 business leaders that emphasize how QR codes have expanded beyond convenience and increasingly become a business necessity.

The report demonstrates the value of QR codes in revenue generation, customer engagement and first-party data collection. Notably, 62% of businesses surveyed project higher sales in 2025 due to QR-focused initiatives, including transforming physical spaces into digital assets that turn every surface into a point of sale, like interactive aisle endcaps or product packaging.

Findings from the report illustrate that QR codes are fundamental to customer-initiated interactions. They turn physical points in the customer journey into two-way communication channels that promote engagement and provide valuable insights into consumer behavior. According to the report, QR codes signal high-intent interactions, resulting in 3-4x higher engagement rates on linked pages, and 95% of businesses confirm using those QR engagements to collect first-party data.

Other key findings from the report include:

SK keyfoundry, an 8-inch pure-play foundry in Korea, offers a new 3D Hall-effect sensor technology that can measure speed and direction through three-dimensional magnetic field detection for its foundry customers.

The Hall-effect sensor is a device that measures the strength of a magnetic field using the Hall-effect, which detects the voltage difference generated when a conductor or semiconductor passes through a magnetic field. The measured magnetic field is utilized in applications that leverage the position, speed, rotation, direction, and current of devices.

SK keyfoundry has provided a variety of products using existing 1D (one-dimensional) and 2D (two-dimensional) Hall-effect sensors, and this new 3D Hall-effect sensor integrates both Vertical and Planar Hall-effect sensors on a single chip. Annual inReach SOS report emphasizes the value of Garmin satellite communication devices

Garmin released its 2024 inReach SOS Report, highlighting trends involving SOS incidents reported to Garmin Response during the past calendar year. The report provides insights into the activities and locations of adventurers who find themselves in need of emergency help. Since 2011, inReach satellite technology1 has helped hikers, explorers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts stay in touch globally with two-way text messaging, location tracking and critical SOS emergency response services. That technology was expanded in 2024 with the release of inReach Messenger Plus, allowing users to exchange photo and voice messages while off the grid, which can provide essential information to emergency responders when seconds count.

People sent an SOS message the most during hiking and backpacking activities, followed by driving and motorcycling. There was also an increase in dirt biking and rafting incidents.

Apples Find My network can be tricked to track any Bluetooth device

Hackers have found a way to exploit Apple’s Find My network by manipulating Bluetooth signals to turn virtually any device into a trackable AirTag. While the Find My network is a valuable tool for locating lost iPhones, misplaced luggage, or even stolen vehicles equipped with AirTags, security researchers have discovered a method to bypass its protections.

A research team from George Mason University, including associate professors Qiang Zeng and Lannan Luo, along with PhD students Chen and Xiaoyue Ma, developed an attack called “nRootTag.” This exploit manipulates Bluetooth addresses to deceive the Find My network into recognizing a non-Apple device as a missing AirTag.

AirTags work by transmitting Bluetooth signals, which are picked up by nearby iPhones and Apple devices. These signals are then relayed through the Find My network to Apple’s servers, allowing the owner to track the device anonymously. In their experiments, the researchers successfully made non-Apple hardware behave like an AirTag, making it trackable on the network.

NFC Forum simplifies certification for updated devices

The NFC Forum has updated its certification program, making it easier and more affordable for device manufacturers to maintain certification when updating their operating systems—provided the changes do not affect NFC functionality.

Previously, any OS update required full recertification. Now, under version 3.1 of the NFC Forum Certification Policy, manufacturers can self-certify that an update does not alter NFC-related functionality, eliminating the need for additional testing.

This new “Inheritance by OS Update” feature allows manufacturers to retain NFC Forum Certification on previously certified hardware without repeating tests for unchanged NFC components. The program distinguishes between Analog testing (hardware) and Digital testing (software), recognizing that OS updates typically affect only software while leaving NFC hardware—such as antennas—unchanged.

If an OS update has no impact on NFC functionality, manufacturers only need to update administrative details, avoiding costly and time-consuming lab testing. Certification now lasts for the product’s entire lifecycle, ensuring ongoing NFC reliability without unnecessary delays.

By adopting this streamlined process, manufacturers can keep their devices up to date while preserving certification in the most efficient way possible.

SparkFun Electronics has launched the SparkPNT RTK Facet mosaic L-Band, a high-precision geolocation and surveying receiver. Equipped with Septentrio’s multi-band mosaic-X5, it delivers centimeter-level accuracy, achieving 6 mm RTK fixes in under a minute, according to SparkFun.

The receiver connects to phones or tablets via Bluetooth and outputs NMEA data, ensuring compatibility with most geographic information system (GIS) software. It leverages u-blox’s PointPerfect service for real-time corrections, transmitted via a geosynchronous Inmarsat satellite.

Built around an ESP32 WROOM and the mosaic-X5 GNSS multi-band receiver, the RTK Facet mosaic L-Band includes peripheral hardware and a surveyor-grade L1/L2/L5-band antenna designed for GNSS signal reception and PointPerfect correction.

Xona Secures $4.65M Contract with AFRL to Demonstrate Capabilities of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) GPS Alternative in Commercial User Equipment

Xona Space Systems (Xona), the company developing a high-performance complementary alternative to GPS, has secured a contract with Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) to demonstrate and mature resilient commercial PNT (Positioning, Navigation and Timing) solutions for DoD missions. This award, granted through the Space Technology Advanced Research – Fast-tracking Innovative Software and Hardware (STAR-FISH) program, brings Xona's total signed contracts to over $20 million to date.

Through this contract, Xona will demonstrate key performance aspects of its PULSAR high-performance satellite navigation service on multiple commercial user devices and in a variety of scenarios, including where GPS and other Global Navigation Satellite Signals (GNSS) may be challenged or denied. Testing will include demonstrations of jamming and spoofing resilience, multipath effect reduction, and security key distribution. This effort will accelerate the readiness of advanced alt-PNT capabilities in commercial off-the-shelf user equipment to meet DoD user needs with rapid acquisition times.

As part of this contract Xona has partnered with several leading GPS/GNSS user equipment providers with the ability to rapidly manufacture and deploy PULSAR enabled devices. Partners who will be demonstrating performance of their devices with the PULSAR service as part of this contract include QinetiQ, StarNav, and Locus Lock.

This multi-year award will feature Xona's advanced simulation capabilities along with demonstrations using the first PULSAR satellite that is scheduled to launch in June 2025.
