ETSI releases consumer IoT market security guidelines

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has issued new guidelines to enhance the cybersecurity and data protection of consumer IoT devices.

As more household devices connect to the internet, these guidelines highlight the associated vulnerabilities that come with increased convenience and connectivity.

“Consumers are increasingly reliant on connected devices for secure transactions, making it essential for manufacturers to prioritize security by design to earn that trust,” stated Jan Ellsberger, Director General at ETSI.

“These guidelines aim to tackle the most critical vulnerabilities, and I am confident they will help create a safer IoT ecosystem, provided we remain vigilant—understanding that this work is never truly ‘finished.’”

The document clarifies that it does not aim to solve every security, data protection, and privacy issue related to consumer IoT. Instead, it focuses on the most urgent and common vulnerabilities by providing a “baseline level of security and data protection.”
