Google TV ads have giant QR codes now

Google TV has introduced a new ad format featuring a gigantic QR code overlaying the content. Over the past few years, ads on Google TV have evolved significantly. Initially, they only promoted content available on the platform, but now they advertise everything from cars to chicken tenders.

Recently, an issue arose with these ads when a confusing video game ad prompted viewers to “buy now” with a link that simply opened a YouTube channel. Google TV appears to be addressing this problem by incorporating QR codes into ads.

A new ad for the latest Range Rover on Google TV showcases a giant QR code on the screen. Users can scan the QR code to visit the advertiser's link, which in this case, directs to YouTube, but it could potentially lead to any website. This new format has also been observed in an Xbox ad on Google TV.

While the new format certainly grabs attention and could better serve users, it does feel somewhat clunky in the overall user interface due to its large size.

Ironically, this change comes as Google TV has been surveying more users about the quantity of ads on the homescreen.
