Greece Introduces 10-Year Digital ID Cards with RFID Technology

Greece has announced a major overhaul of its national identification system, replacing the long-used blue ID cards with new digital identity cards that will be valid for 10 years. The move aims to modernize identification, improve security, and align the country with current European standards.

The new IDs are similar in size and format to a credit card and include an RFID chip that enables secure electronic identification without tracking a holder’s location. Each card also features a QR code for quick verification of personal details, as well as clearly displayed issue and expiration dates.

Introducing an expiration period means citizens’ personal and biometric data will be updated regularly, reducing the risk of fraud and outdated information. This brings Greece in line with practices already common across many EU member states.

Once issued, citizens will need to update their new ID details with various organizations, such as banks, employers, insurance providers, telecom companies, utilities, and digital payment services, to avoid disruptions in everyday transactions.

Applications for the new ID cards will be made by scheduling an online appointment through the official government platform, where personal data will be retrieved automatically from national registries. In cases of loss or theft, cardholders are required to contact the issuing authority immediately.

The application involves a modest fee, along with a statutory police charge. Official ID photos must be taken by a certified photographer and uploaded as part of the process.

A key feature of the new system is the Personal Number (PA) — a unique identifier that replaces multiple existing identification numbers when dealing with public authorities. This number will be printed on the card and can also be managed digitally through the Gov.gr Wallet.
