RFID tags in tires spark debate over safety and privacy

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags are becoming increasingly common in modern tires, prompting discussion about both their benefits and their potential privacy implications.

Tire manufacturers say the tiny embedded chips help identify individual tires throughout their lifecycle. They can simplify manufacturing, improve inventory management, speed up safety recalls, reduce installation errors, verify authenticity, and support recycling efforts. Some companies are also exploring ways RFID technology can work alongside vehicle systems to improve maintenance and tire management. (⁠NHTSA)

Privacy advocates, however, have raised concerns that RFID-equipped tires could theoretically be used to identify or track vehicles. While the tags contain identification data about the tire itself rather than personal information about the vehicle owner, critics argue that any technology capable of uniquely identifying an object deserves careful consideration.

Government research has found that RFID tire tags generally do not store personal data and, by themselves, are not considered a significant threat to consumer privacy. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the tags primarily carry manufacturing and product identification information. The agency concluded that concerns should continue to be evaluated but found no evidence that the technology inherently exposes drivers’ personal information. (⁠NHTSA)
