Sofar Ocean Plans Expansion Of Its Worldwide Network Of Sensors
Sofar has secured a $39 million Series B syndicate round with Union Square Ventures and the Foundry Group. The company has developed and launched a free-floating, global Spotter sensor network of thousands of solar-powered buoys across all five oceans, racking up more than 5 million hours and delivering more than 100,000 unique data points every day.
The Spotters take real-time measurements of weather, wave energy, wind, surface currents, sea temperatures and more.
The CEO says ocean intelligence is a new and emerging sector, and as a result, is still somewhat undefined. “We know more about the moon or Mars than we know about the ocean, even though it makes up about 70% of Earth,” the CEO says.
