Samsung Launches NFC “Tap to Transfer” Peer-to-Peer Payments in the US
Samsung has rolled out a new feature in the US that lets Galaxy smartphone users send money to each other simply by tapping their phones together. The new NFC-based Tap to Transfer functionality is now available via Samsung Wallet.
The feature works through Visa and Mastercard networks, using Google’s Visa Direct system to enable near-instant transfers—usually within minutes. Users can send money directly from a stored Visa or Mastercard debit card in their Samsung Wallet to another person’s account.
The recipient doesn’t need to be using Samsung Wallet or even have a digital wallet at all. As long as they have a debit card that supports contactless payments (NFC), they can receive the funds directly. For added flexibility, users can also send money remotely by selecting a recipient via their phone number within the app—no physical contact needed.
While the service is currently free to use, Samsung notes that a transaction fee of 1.75% (minimum $0.25) will eventually be introduced. Each transfer is capped at $500, with a $500 daily limit as well.
