Google rolls out redesign of Android’s QR code scanner

Google has now rolled out a refreshed design for Android’s built‑in QR code scanner via an update to Google Play Services (version 25.26.35).

When you launch the QR scanner—whether through the Quick Settings tile or lock‑screen shortcut—you’re greeted with an elegant animation as the square viewfinder appears. The user interface overhaul places all interaction buttons into a new pill‑shaped control near the bottom of the screen, making them far easier to reach with one hand.

Gone are the top‑right flash toggle and close (“×”) icons. The “Scan from photo” button has also been integrated into the lower control area, and the standard “Scan QR code” label is now smaller and positioned above the viewfinder so it doesn’t obscure your view  .

Once a QR code is recognized, the bottom sheet is more useful too: besides the classic “Open” option, you’ll now see “Copy text” and “Share,” all styled in Material You design  .

The redesign was first previewed back in May in Google Play Services beta v25.19, and began its general rollout today (July 28), with gradual availability depending on your device and Google Play version. A quick restart may help if it’s not showing yet.
