GPS Bug Throws Older Wahoo Computers Into Chaos

A glitch reminiscent of the Y2K issue has disrupted GPS functionality for owners of early-generation Wahoo devices—specifically the V1 Bolt and Roam models—leaving many users puzzled and frustrated.

These first-generation units rely on a very basic 10-bit system to track GPS time. This limitation has now caused widespread tracking failures, manifesting in inaccurate or completely missing positioning data.

On August 19, Wahoo issued an apology to affected users and confirmed that the root cause—a flaw tied to the limited GPS time system—has been identified. Their engineers are actively testing a firmware update to resolve the issue. Given the age of these older models, that process is proceeding cautiously; Wahoo expects to release the fix soon and urges users to monitor their support page for updates.

Discussion threads in cycling communities, like TrainerRoad, reveal that the problem is indeed limited to older devices—newer models appear unaffected. Many users describe the bug as “a pain in the butt to fix,” while others note it cropped up unexpectedly over the weekend.
