Google Wallet May Soon Let You Add Payment Cards Just by Tapping Them

Google appears to be working on an update for the Google Wallet app that would make adding contactless payment cards quicker and more convenient.

According to unreleased code discovered by Android Authority, Google is preparing to introduce a feature that lets users add cards using near-field communication (NFC) — the same wireless technology used for contactless payments.

In practice, this would allow you to add a new card simply by tapping it against your phone, much like you would when making a payment at a terminal.

This new method is expected to appear on the “Add payment method” screen alongside the existing manual entry option.

While NFC should significantly speed up the process, users may still need to manually enter their CVV (or CVC) number for security purposes.

Android Authority didn’t find any details about compatibility, so it’s not yet clear which card types and issuers will support this feature when it launches.
