2D Barcode Closure Labels Simplify FSMA 204 Compliance

2D barcode closure labels can help fresh produce packers comply with the U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Section 204 by simplifying product traceability, according to packaging company Kwik Lok. The labels allow key tracking information to be captured with a single scan, improving visibility throughout the supply chain.

Printed directly on package closure labels, the 2D barcodes can store data such as the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), lot number, production date, and other traceability information. Kwik Lok says this enables producers to meet evolving digital traceability requirements while maintaining compatibility with GS1 standards.

The company also highlights operational benefits. Because product-specific information is printed on the closure label rather than the package itself, growers and packers can use the same packaging across multiple product varieties. This reduces packaging complexity and makes it easier to update product information or promotional messaging without redesigning the entire package.

Kwik Lok offers an integrated system of closure equipment, printers, and labels to support the transition. For many existing customers, upgrading to 2D barcode labeling requires only limited hardware additions. While compliance with FSMA 204 is required by 2028, many food producers and retailers are already preparing their traceability systems for the shift to GS1-compliant 2D barcodes.
