Pixel 11 moves the NFC antenna to the top of the phone
NFC placement is easy to overlook until you actually need to use it. When the antenna is positioned somewhere unexpected, figuring out exactly where to tap your phone can be surprisingly frustrating. The top of the device is arguably the most intuitive location, particularly for contactless payments and other tap-based interactions.
With the Pixel 11 lineup, Google has followed a trend also seen on Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series by putting an updated NFC tag near the top of the phone. Samsung reportedly achieved this by adding another antenna, while Google appears to have relocated the existing hardware instead.
The change should be especially useful with Google’s new Tap to Share feature. Google says the updated NFC setup makes it possible to quickly exchange contact cards or share large files with nearby Android devices simply by tapping the phones together.
There are plenty of other situations where the new placement could make a difference, too. Contactless payments are an obvious example. Anyone who has used a phone to accept payments through services such as Square knows how annoying it can be when you have to remember the precise spot on the back of the device where another phone or card needs to be placed.
It may not be the headline feature of the Pixel 11, but moving the NFC antenna to the top is exactly the kind of small hardware change that can make everyday interactions feel more natural.
The Pixel 11 series is now available for pre-order and is scheduled to begin shipping on August 20.
