Hallandstrafiken to Pilot Swipe-Based Mobile Ticketing System

Swedish regional public transportation provider Hallandstrafiken is set to trial a mobile pay-as-you-go ticketing service that eliminates the need for passengers to tap on and off during their journey. Instead, travelers will simply swipe on their ticketing app to start and end their trips.

The pilot will use an app developed by Swiss provider Fairtiq, allowing passengers to travel seamlessly across all scheduled services in the region without worrying about selecting the right ticket—even when traveling with family or friends.

The system automatically detects transfers between buses or trains, tracking the journey until passengers reach their final stop. To end the trip, users swipe again, or if they forget, the app either sends a reminder or automatically stops tracking. The best available fare is then calculated and optimized daily.

Fairtiq’s technology is already in use across eight countries—Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. Hallandstrafiken is the first to introduce it in Sweden.
