Honduras introduces RFID-enabled licence plates

Honduras is rolling out licence plates equipped with RFID technology as part of a nationwide vehicle registration upgrade. Over the next three and a half years, German company Tönnjes will supply around 2.9 million smart licence plates and RFID security stickers for the initiative.

The programme is intended to eliminate a backlog of more than one million unissued licence plates. Since 2023, a shortage of metal plates has forced hundreds of thousands of motorists to rely on temporary paper permits. The new system is also designed to meet expected demand through 2030.

Each licence plate contains an RFID chip and uses digital authentication. Vehicle information is managed through a central platform, allowing authorised government agencies to access registration data in real time. The technology is expected to improve the detection of counterfeit licence plates and support the enforcement of traffic regulations by identifying vehicles linked to unpaid fines or other records.

In addition to the licence plate, every vehicle will receive an RFID security sticker. The sticker will be placed on the windscreen of cars and on the headlight of motorcycles, providing an extra layer of identification and security.

As part of the agreement, a local production facility will be established in Honduras to manufacture the licence plates. The government says the factory will strengthen domestic production capacity while creating new jobs, with distribution of the new metal licence plates expected to begin shortly.
