AirTags help police track down stolen SUV in Philadelphia

A Philadelphia couple used multiple Apple AirTags hidden inside their SUV to help police locate the vehicle after it was stolen from outside their home.

Aleks Vasov and his wife, Regina Morozova, said they were awakened shortly before 3 a.m. on Sept. 4 by the sound of their white Dodge Durango starting up. The SUV was parked outside their home on Jasper Street in East Kensington.

Surveillance footage shows a person breaking the rear window of the Durango before getting inside. A second camera captured several people leaving another vehicle, entering the SUV and driving away.

Vasov initially considered chasing the vehicle but instead called 911. While he was speaking with police, Morozova reviewed footage from their home security cameras.

The couple also had another way of tracking the SUV. They had placed several AirTags inside the vehicle, allowing them to see its location after it was stolen.

While police were taking their report, Vasov and Morozova followed the AirTag locations and passed the information on to officers. According to Vasov, they provided updates as the vehicle moved until it eventually stopped.

Police later recovered the Durango more than four miles north of the location where it had been stolen. The couple said the vehicle was in poor condition when it was returned to them.

The Philadelphia Police Department said its East Detectives are investigating the theft. Investigators are following several leads to determine whether the incident is connected to other crimes in the area.

The couple said they remain frustrated and angry about the theft. Vasov hopes investigators will identify those responsible and determine why the SUV was targeted.
