Lufthansa now embraces AirTags
Lufthansa, once adamantly opposed to AirTags for reasons known only to itself, has now embraced them—integrating support into its app and even celebrating the move. Back in 2022, the airline attempted to justify its ban by citing vague safety concerns and unspecified legal violations.
In reality, the decision seemed more like an attempt to avoid scrutiny as airlines faced backlash over lost and stolen luggage. The ban, however, barely lasted three days before Lufthansa reversed course, claiming a 'risk assessment' had cleared the way—though it was less about technical analysis and more about public pressure.
Passengers had made their objections clear, and many would have ignored the ban anyway. Worse, discouraging AirTags may have even hurt ticket sales; after all, admitting you don’t want travelers tracking their own luggage isn’t exactly reassuring. Faced with this reality, Lufthansa has now pivoted to full-on adoption.
